A Small Introduction to Google's New Social Networking Project - Google+ ::-

Google has tried several times, without much success, to take on Facebook the master of social networking. Now Google, the king of internet search but a bust on the social front, launched its rival to Facebook a social networking service called Google+, — which happens to look a lot like Facebook. The service, which is initially available to a select group of Google users who will soon be able to invite others, will let people share and discuss status updates, photos and links, much as they do on Facebook.

          Google’s senior vice president for engineering Vic Gundotra said in a blog post about the long awaited social networking, "Online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it."

          Google+ gives users to separate online friends and family into different "Circles," or networks, and to share information only with members of a particular circle. Bradley Horowitz, a vice-president for product management at Google says, "In real life, we have walls and windows and I can speak to you knowing who's in the room, but in the online world, you get to a 'Share' box and you share with the whole world" Gundotra added, "We want to make Google better by including you, your relationships and your interests."

          One of the criticisms of Facebook is that updates are shared with all of one’s friends unless a user has gone through a relatively complicated process to create separate Facebook Groups. While in Google+ Gundotra says,"Not all relationships are created equal, So in life we share one thing with college buddies, another with parents, and almost nothing with our boss. The problem is that today’s online services turn friendship into fast food, wrapping everyone in ‘friend’ paper, and sharing really suffers".

          Google+ project will be different in one significant way, which Google hopes will be enough to convince people to use yet another social network. It is meant for sharing with groups - like colleagues, roommates or hiking friends - not with all of one's friends or the entire Web. It also offers group text messaging and “Hangouts” which allows for video chatting among friends.

          Google+, located at http://plus.google.com, is currently being tested by a small number of people or is  available by invitation only. But Google said in a message on the site that it "won’t be long before the Google+ project is ready for everyone".

What Analysts says about Google+ and Facebook ::-

          Facebook users are unlikely to duplicate their network of friends on Google+ and post to both sites, but that they could use them for different types of communication.

         Google+ could also attract Facebook holdouts who have been uncomfortable sharing too publicly.

          Some Analysts says Google+ may already be too late. In May, 180 million people visited Google sites, including YouTube, compared with 157.2 million on Facebook, according to comScore. But Facebook users looked at 103 billion pages and spent an average of 375 minutes on the site, while Google users viewed 46.3 billion pages and spent 231 minutes.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and chief executive of Facebook is becomes most popular person on Google+. Zuckerberg had nearly 35,000 people following his updates on the service, more than anyone else in a broad survey of Google+ profiles by Social Statistics, an outside service. His fan base exceeds that of Larry Page, one of the founders of Google and its recently appointed chief executive, who had only 24,000 people following him.

Bidi more Harmful than Cigarette

In probably the first such large-scale study of its kind, Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, in collaboration with the ministry of health proved that bidis and other forms of tobacco (su-pari, gutkha, among others) are more harmful than cigarettes.

The study had a follow-up period of 5.5 years with as many as 87,222 male members from Mumbai participating in it. As per the study, the incidence of oral cancer in bidi smokers was 42% higher than in cigarette smokers. For all respiratory and intrathoracic organs combined, the increase was 69%; for lung and larynx, the increases were 35% and 112%, respectively Smokeless tobacco, on the other hand, was associated with cancers of the lip, oral cavity, pharynx, digestive, respiratory, and intrathoracic organs.

While the study was completed last year, it was published last month in the prestigious medical journal - Cancer Causes and Control - on March 5.

"While the popular perception is that bidi is natural, hand-rolled and has fewer chemicals, it is as harmful as cigarette smoking if not more. While there have been studies done abroad about the effects of cigarette smoking, there has been no Indian study comparing the effects of bidi smoking, cigarette smoking and smokeless cigarettes," said Dr. P. C. Gupta, the director of Sekhsaria Institute, based in Navi Mumbai.

In India, the bidi industry that is mostly home-grown accounts for 48% of the tobacco consumption making them much more popular than cigarettes. Despite the small quantity of tobacco it contains, bidis deliver more carbon monoxide than cigarettes. Bidis, the report states, necessitates deeper, more frequent inhalation as they extinguish more easily. An average bidi smoker puffs a cigarette nine times as opposed to a person puffing bidi 28 times. This is harder on the lungs as compared to cigarette smoking. Besides this, bidi contains more particulate matter as they do not have filters. They also have more nicotine, as compared to cigarettes. Bidis also contain higher amounts of chemicals such as phenol, hydrogen cyanide, benzopyrenes, carbon monoxide, and ammonia.

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev announced a 'Satyagraha Against Corruption' from June 4, when he and his supporters will be fasting in New Delhi for the cause. The announcement gave rise to speculation of competition with Anna Hazare's India Against Corruption (IAC) movement. Ramdev spoke to the Hindustan Times about his campaign and his views on the IAC. Excerpts:

Why a separate protest when you are already supporting Anna Hazare's anti-graft movement?

IAC has been fighting for the Jan lokpal bill while our movement concentrates on corruption and black money. Black money is a grave issue with the involvement of many powerful people. We have been working against corruption for the past five years. It is not a new movement.

Would you place your demands under the IAC banner if Hazare asked?

The IAC is an NGO based in New Delhi that has emerged recently and we have made a huge contribution towards it.Supporting the IAC doesn't mean that we lose our identity.

What are your major demands and how do you think they can be attained?

We have three demands — recover the Indian money illegally invested in foreign countries and declare it as national property, ban high denomination currency notes as they lead to corruption at high levels, and finally the death penalty for the corrupt.

      To recover black money, the government needs to pass the UN Convention against Corruption that will lead to a major change in the existing Indian laws as per international standards.

      We need a complete change in the system to make it free from corruption. We will be building pressure as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the government work only under pressure.

          

Don't you think the death penalty can invite criticism from the government and human rights activists?

According to the World Hunger Report, 70 lakh people die in India due to hunger and malnutrition. Corruption is a major reason for this.

     Human rights activists don't save people dying of hunger, instead they save the corrupt people responsible for the deaths.

Is this a step towards politics?

I have no wish to join politics.
